Chasing Brooklyn Review

Chasing Brooklyn Chasing Brooklyn by Lisa Schroeder

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I am so surprised by how much I liked this book. I first came across this author on Goodreads First Read contest and thought that the summery sounded interesting. Then I saw the book trailer and it went from slightly interesting to I need to go out and find it. I went to Borders and they didn’t carry it, but luckily I was going to Blue Willow Bookstore, an indie bookstore in Houston, to see Becca Fitzpatrick and they had it. So without even looking any further I said I’ll take it! So while waiting for Becca I started to read. I was really surprised because the book is written in verse not in chapter format. It’s kind of like a journal told from the two main characters. Also I am telling you this because had I just picked up the book off a shelf and flipped through it I might not have got it and I would have missed out on a great story. When I first started I found it hard to keep up. If you have ever had a conversation with me about books then you know that I have to know what the characters sound and look like in my head and I can hear them talk the parts I read. I know I sound crazy. So back to my review at first I had to adjust to the verse and try to figure out the characters and get the voices straight. Once I moved past all of that I found a really great story.

The story starts with Brooklyn describing how exactly one year ago to the day she lost her boyfriend Lucca. On the same day Nico, Lucca’s, brother is going through the same thoughts and emotions. Lucca died in a car accident when his friend Gabe wrapped his car around the pole. Gabe walked away from the accident but Lucca didn’t. Neither Brooklyn nor Nico are the same since the accident then suddenly Gabe dies. Both feel like they are being haunted and pushed together without knowing. Brooklyn is so sad and you wonder if someone can come back from that. What she had with Lucca was perfection for her and she doesn’t think she will ever be happy. Nico felt that Lucca was always the better of the two and doesn’t know what to do. Nico isn’t sure if Lucca is haunting him and can’t figure out what the message is. This is a really beautiful story and I highly recommend it!

Favorite character: Nico.

Favorite Quotes:

“Everyday is a choice. Choose life. Or choose death. What do you choose?”

“Love is the answer. Not fear”

“I won’t forget you, my flower girl

Did I cry? Yes!

Will I buy another book by the same author: Yes!

Meridian Book Review

Meridian Meridian by Amber Kizer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This book reminds me of Ghost Whisper which is one of my favorite shows. Meridian is girl who has felt like she causes death. Growing up animals would walk up to her and die. Or she would wake up and find a dead animal or insect on her pillow. She doesn’t have many friends because of this and her family seems afraid of her. When she turns 16 a huge accident happens and she feels the pain of those who are hurt and dying. Her parents rush her off live with her Auntie Merry without an explanation of why death follows her. When Meridian gets to her aunties she finds out that there is a big family secret she has to deal with and fast. When she arrives she meets Tens her aunt’s helper. Tens is young, handsome, and mysterious. Meridian feels drawn to Tens but can’t really explain it and while Tens seems to like her he pushes her away. She tries to figure out how Tens ended up at aunties. Meridian has a short amount of time to figure out her gift before evil tries to kill or claim her. This book was a quick and good read. I look forward to the next one.

In this eagerly awaited continuation of the bestselling "Immortals" series, Ever struggles to help her best friend Haven transition into life as an immortal—trying to keep her from doing anything that puts them at risk, while attempting to gain control over her enemy Roman, so she can finally obtain the antidote that will allow her and Damen to be together. But when the spell she casts backfires, resulting in a strange, foreign pulse that binds her to Roman instead, Ever turns to Jude and dark magick, desperately attempting to break free of the curse, and ultimately risking everything she knows and loves—including her beloved Damen

Info via:

So for those Immortal Fans what do you think?  I was not a fan of Haven and personally think she should have died in the last book.  I mean seriously she was super mean to Ever.  Also I really want Ever to end up with Jude.  Am I the only one?  So come on July 7th I'm ready to see what is next!

Radiant Shadows (Wicked Lovely) Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

There are always choices.

This is how author Melissa Marr inscribed my book. For those of you who are not familiar with Melissa Marr or the Wicked Lovely Books. Let me tell you a little about them.
Marr created a world of faeries that are ruled by courts and each book is based on different characters in each of the courts. The courts are Summer, Winter, Dark, and High Court. In Wicked Lovely, book one, Aislinn a girl who has the sight to see fairies and has spent her life trying to avoid them but failed. Wicked Lovely tells the story of the Summer and Winter Court. Ink Exchange, book two, is the story of Leslie, an emotionally lost girl and Irial King of the Dark Court and I must say this was one of my favorites in the series. In Fragile Eternity, book three, we see all the courts and meet High Queen Sorcha who rules over Faerie, her twin sister Bananach the faery of War and destruction, and a brother they created together Devlin who is the High Queen’s assassin.
Radiant Shadows, book four, is based on Ani a half mortal/half faery and Devlin, assassin of the High Queen. Ani is daughter to Gabriel of the Dark Court. Ani was first mentioned in Ink Exchange and seemed dangerous even then. Devlin was ordered to kill Ani when she was just a child but didn’t. For the first time in his life he went against the High Queen’s orders. In the mean time Ani grows up wanting to be part of the Dark Court and prove herself. Later we find out Ani isn’t like any Halfling or faery and has attracted the wrong type of attention from Bananach. Devlin is forced to either side with War, protect Ani, or fix his mistake and kill Ani like his queen ordered. We see that Bananach is getting closer to bringing war among all the fey. I loved how the book ended and can’t wait for book five.

Radiant Shadows will be released April 20th 2010 by HarperTeen.

I would like to thank both Melissa Marr and First Reads on for my book which I won on a contest from First Reads.

Dreaming Anastasia Book Trailer

I read this book last year and I thought it was really great. Joy Preble is from Texas and a first time author.  Here is a little about her book:

Sixteen year old Anne thinks her life is pretty ordinary – until she smacks into handsome, mysterious, and okay, annoying Ethan on her way to chemistry class. Now Anne has powers she doesn’t understand, a history altering mission she may not want, and a growing attraction to this blue-eyed stranger. And Ethan- who at eighteen made some choices he’s starting to regret – realizes that Anne is the girl for whom he’s been searching – for a very, very long time. Stir in doomed Russian Grand Duchess Anastasia – who is definitely not quite as dead as the history books say – and Baba Yaga, the legendary witch from Russian folklore, and you’ve got DREAMING ANASTASIA, a contemporary YA fantasy that alternates between the voices of Anne, Ethan, and Anastasia as Anne and Ethan join forces to battle the bad guys and save Anastasia. Only problem is – no one’s quite sure who’s really bad and who’s good. And everyone has some secrets.

Dreaming Anastasia is set for a Fall '09 release, from Sourcebooks.  You can find her here:

Just Listen Book Review

Just Listen Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The story starts out with Annabel the girl who lives in a glass house and is a model. She was one of the popular girls until something happened at the beginning of summer that changed her life. We follow Annabel as she goes back to school to find out that she is now an outcast. Instead of talking to her parents about what's bothering her she just lies to them and pretend everything is fine. We also see that her family has a lot of issues to go through and she feels she can't add to those problems. While feeling like she has no one she becomes friends with Owen, a guy most people are afraid of. Owen turns out to be just the friend she needs. Instead of being this angry guy he's sweet and honest with Annabel. Throughout the book we get glimpses of what happened to Annabel and why she became withdrawn from her old life. Her story is one that nobody should experience but everyone should be informed about. Just when Annabel feels she has ran from her past something happens and she has to face it. Owen tries to reach out to her but she pushes him away. During this time Annabel has to decide to keep running or facing her past. This story is touching and beautiful.

Devil's Kiss Book Trailer & Sequel News

One afternoon while browsing at Borders I came across Devil's Kiss by Sarwat Chadda.  The cover really grabbed me and after read a few pages I liked that it had to do with The Knights Templar.  I really loved this book and it was one of my 5 star books of 2009.  While on Sarwat's blog a few days ago I found the book trailer where he talks about the book and I wanted to share it.  He also blogged about his next book Dark Goddess which is the sequel to Devil's Kiss.  Now we won't see this book in the US until October but if you haven't added Devil's Kiss to your list then watch this and I'm sure you will.  For more information go to Sarwat Chadda's website

Deadly Little Lies Review

Deadly Little Lies (Touch, #2) Deadly Little Lies by Laurie Faria Stolarz

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Deadly Little Lies is the second book in the Touch Series and the follow up to Deadly Little Secrets. The story begins when Camelia feels like Ben's gift has been transferred to her but is that really possible? Also we find out more about aunt Alexia, which gives us more insight into Camelia and her mom. Camelia also starts getting photos and prank calls which make her feel like her stalker is back or someone is playing pranks on her. This brings in all the mystery action that makes the book really hard to put down. When book one ended her love leaves town leaving Camelia heartbroken. In Deadly Little Lies her love life doesn't get any less complicated especially when you throw in the new boy in town. The book is great and a fast read. While there are no vampires I find that Twilight Fans can really relate to this book.

Deadly Little Secrets Book Trailer

I recently finished reading Deadly Little Secrets, the first book in the Touch Series, by Laurie Faria Stolarz. Deadly Little Secrets was the first book I read this year and a great way to kick off the New Year. I am currently reading book two Deadly Little Lies and it's just as great. I highly recommend this series!

This trailer really stands out from some of the others. I think it's because it feels like a movie trailer which is really nice. The book trailer made by the film students at the University of Texas:

Deadly Little Secret Book Review

Deadly Little Secret (Touch, #1) Deadly Little Secret by Laurie Faria Stolarz

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book. It's a bit of a romance with a lot of suspense. Camelia is a high school student who almost gets run down by a car, yes a little twilight, by this mysterious guy. She feels an instant connection to him but he disappears. Shortly after he enrolls in her school and she is so drawn to him. Only he comes with a dark past because he is accused of killing his last girlfriend. Around the same time Camelia starts receiving strange presents at her home and unknown calls. She finds out she is in danger but she isn't sure who to trust. The whole book you are constantly trying to figure out who the stalker is. I had trouble putting this book down. I loved it!

Chasing Brooklyn Book Trailer

Here is a book I am really looking forward to. The author just posted a book trailer and I wanted to share it.

About the book:

Chasing Brooklyn by Lisa Schroeder

Released January 5th 2010 by Simon and Schuster

Restless souls and empty hearts.

Brooklyn can’t sleep. Her boyfriend, Lucca died a year ago, and now their friend Gabe has died of an overdose. Every time she closes her eyes, Gabe's ghost is there, waiting for her. She has no idea what he wants or why it isn't Lucca chasing her through her dreams.

Nico can’t stop. He’s always running, trying so hard not to feel the pain of missing Lucca. But when he begins receiving messages from his dead brother, telling him to help Brooklyn, emotions come crashing to the surface.

As the nightmares escalate and the messages become relentless, Nico reaches out to Brooklyn. But neither of them can admit that they're being haunted. Until they learn to let each other in, not one soul will be able to rest.

Also here is an article by author Melissa Walker. She does really great blogs on Book Covers.
