Review & Contest: Greek Double Date

Double Date (Greek, #1)Double Date by Marsha Warner

If you have ever wondered about the ABC Family hit show Greek this book is for you!  It gives you a good background on who the characters are and what the show is about.  For those who are die hard fans the book might feel slow because of all the background stories and this book is based on an episode that happened in the past, but it's stll a new story and not just an episode that was turned into a book.  In Double Date Rusty talks his sister Casey into finding his roommate Dale a date for the engineer’s banquet, but Casey can’t find one person to agree to go with Dale so her solution is to go as Dale’s date.  Dale has had a crush on Casey from the first time he saw her and last minute problems move the engineer’s banquet to the night of the All Greek Formal.  Casey’s on and off boyfriend Cappy is also at the engineer’s ball where the two end up spending time together.  Cappy is funny, laid back, hot in a slacker boy sort of way, and hands down my favorite character in Greek.   I found this to be a quick read and something to hold me over until the new season!

If you would like a copy of this book fill out the form below.  US and Canada only.

Winner!

As many of you remember Ellen Hopkins was uninvited from the 2011 Teen Lit Fest in Humble, Texas.  Many were outrage and some have said the event has been canceled but I haven't seen any formal word from Humble.  I gave my readers a chance to spread the word about what was happening and as a thank you I would pick one and give them a book from one of the authors who backed out of the event.  I received many entries and I only wish I could give everyone a book.

The Winner is #5: MamaSeal.  You have been notified via email please reply within 48 hours or a new winner will be chosen.

It's Mockingjay Day!

NOT A BOOK REVIEW. NO SPOILERS

The book community is celebrating! Today is the day we have been waiting for all year!!! I know I say that about a lot of books and I mean it for each and every one! If you, for some reason haven’t read this series….cough…cough..(A certain best bud of mine) ::SHAME::  then run out and pick it up today! My journey started yesterday when I volunteered to work an extra hour so I could be a little late this morning since I was picking up my book. Then, last night I spent hours in front of my closet trying to make my Mockingjay Tee go with my business attire. Finally I decided not to push my luck with my boss and put on slacks and a black top but I did add my Mockingjay pin.
Don’t think it didn’t cross my mind to stay up all night with the kindle edition and take a vacation day. Well being the responsible adult that I am I was out of bed by 5 am, that is 30 minutes earlier than my normal time, so I could get to Blue Willow Bookshop by 7:00 AM. For my twitter followers you know I am late to work 2-3 days a week so it’s rare for me to see 5:30 AM. My sister said she was really proud of me that I would get to work on time and when I explained it was for a book she called me crazy and went back to getting ready.
Now Blue Willow is about 45 minutes from my house with no traffic but why would there not be traffic in the morning rush? Blue Willow is amazing because they normally open at 9:30 am but for Mockingjay they made an exception! Blue Willow also fed those who were crazy….I mean dedicated enough to come to the store at 7 in the morning to pick up their copy. What can be better than a free Chick-fil-A breakfast, Mockingjay first thing in the morning, and the friendly staff at your local indie!?!

Now remember; no spoilers, support your local bookstores, and enjoy Mockingjay Fever!

Also if you’re wondering it took me $3.00 in toll fees, 45 miles, and 1 hr and 20 minutes to get to work!

Review: Radiance by Alyson Noel

Radiance (Radiance, #1)Radiance by Alyson Noel

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Release Date: August 31, 2010

Radiance is such a touching story that it’s bound to be a hit with new readers and long time fans of The Immortals.  In Radiance we follow Ever’s little sister Riley into the afterlife.  For those not familiar with Riley at twelve she lost her life in a car crash that also killed her parents and dog.  The Immortals tells the story of her sister Ever who is the sole survivor of the accident.

From the moment I read about Riley in Evermore, book one of The Immortals, I knew she would be a favorite of mine.  She drives Ever insane, but bottom line she loves her sister.  Reading about Riley in The Immortals would make me cry and a character who can pull at your emotions is a winner.

Ever eventually convinces Riley to crossover and Riley finds out that she has a job to do that will bring her back to earth.  In the afterlife she is reunited with her dog buttercup who will be allowed to travel with her.  She is also assigned a guide, Bodhi is few years older than her, but Riley doesn’t make his job very easy.  Riley is funny, sarcastic, and an overall lovable character!  I can’t wait for more books to come.  Also don’t let the death part fool you this is a lighthearted, sweet, and happy story.

Interview with Kate Kaynak

I would like to welcome Kate Kaynak to my blog. Kate is the author of the Ganzfield series which includes Minder and the newly released Adversary. She is a Yale graduate and has a Ph.D. in Social-Developmental from Rutgers University. After reading Minder I had so many questions I would have liked to ask Kate and now i'm fortunate to have the chance to pose my questions to her.

Can you give us the scoop on Minder.
Minder is the story of Maddie, a 16-year-old girl who finds out she's got a special ability when something terrifying happens and sets it off. She ends up at Ganzfield, a secret training facility in New Hampshire. Ganzfield's got all the nasty, cliquish games of any other high school, except the kids there have abilities like mind-control and pyrokinesis, so it's more intense.

How long did it take to write Minder?
I finished the first draft in about 2 months, but I had to go through about a dozen revisions after that. Even then, my editor made changes on nearly every page.

How long have you been writing?
I've been dabbling since high school and college, but I got serious and completed my first novel in 2007.

The covers are amazing what is the meaning behind them?
I'm so glad you like the covers! They're based on a Gestalt perception test in psychology--the vase that's outlined by two faces. Like Maddie, there's more to them than what someone sees in their first impression.

How many books will be in the series?
I'm revising book 4 right now. Book 2, Adversary, comes out this month, and book 3, Legacy, will be released in January 2011. I plan to have at least six books in the series to resolve the major plot arcs, but I won't postscript the ending like Jo Rowling did with Harry Potter 7. It'll still be open-ended, so I can do more if a good story comes to me. I'm also considering writing the seventh Ganzfield book from Seth's perspective.

On your website you mention that Ganzfield is a real project. So how much of your book is based on fact and how much is fiction?
I really didn't have to invent much. The Ganzfeld experiments were real psychological studies, and Project Star Gate was the actual (now declassified) psychic spy program of the U.S. government. Most of the abilities are found in other places, either in fiction (Stephen King coined the term "pyrokinetic," for example) or in parapsychology research. The physical location of Ganzfield is a real place near North Conway, NH, and Maddie's hometown of Chatham, NJ is real, as well. I invented the G-positive genetic component and dodecamine, though.

Why would this book appeal to the adults who love YA?
Adults who love YA, myself included, enjoy it for the intensity of emotion and the sense of possibility that teenage characters have. When I wrote Minder, I wrote a book that I wanted to read myself.

What will we see happen in Adversary?
Adversary picks up shortly after the end of Minder. We'll see Ganzfield's reaction to the revelations at the end of Minder, and a new arrival will shake things up.

What is the message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
I think the two main themes of Minder are strength in adversity and the healing power of love.

Team Edward, Jacob, or Alice?
I need a "Team Trevor" shirt!
Seriously, though--Team Edward for the books; Team Jacob (so beautiful!) for the movies, and I AM Alice. :)

The contest winner of Minder is Cass of http://wordsonpaperya.blogspot.com/:  An email has been sent to you and you have 72 hours to respond or a new winner will be chosen!  The winner was drawn by Random.org

Thank you so much to Kate for taking the time to answer my questions!  Also remember both Minder and Adversary are available today.

I need a book suggestion!

So I recently finished a book that just left me drained. The writing was amazing and the author really tugs at your emotions, but I need a good light hearted read. Any recommendations? What do you switch to when a certain book has made you depressed, cry, or just overpowered you?

Censoring at 2011 Teen Lit Fest in Humble

While going through tweets I saw that New York Times author Ellen Hopkins was uninvited from a Teen Festival, but what made the shock greater was it's happening 20 minutes from me at 2011 Teen Lit Fest in Humble, Texas. Houston is the 6th largest metro area in the US! How can they be so closed minded?  Shock, anger, and embarrassment all crossed my mind.  Shouldn’t the decision on choosing a book fall on the teen and the parents? What one parent might find offensive another might think is a life lesson. As a book lover I normally try to attend all events in my area but this one I won’t be attending. I also know it’s geared towards teens but at the end of the day it’s all about getting kids to read and to raise funds that help the school. What’s really crazy is that Guy Sconzo, the school superintendent, has yet to read Ellen's books. In Ellen's blog she mentions that this went to the school board and they agreed to disinvite her. When this came to light authors Tera Lynn Childs, Melissa de la Cruz, and Matt de la Pena also withdrew from the event. Bottom line they owe Ellen an apology.

The festival was scheduled to have:
Brian Meehl
Tera Lynn Childs
Melissa de la Cruz
Sharon Flake
Matt de la Pena
Todd Strasser

To Contact:
Guy Sconzo
The Humble ISD Board of Trustees

Since the Humble ISD is keeping these books out I'm going to give one away.  Fill out the form telling me how you made a difference.  Tell a coworker, emailing a friend or Humble, tweeting about it and you could win a copy of one of these author's books.  Your choice and I'll send it to you from Book Depository.com

I'll pick a winner August 25th!

Last Night at Chateau Marmont By Lauren Weisberger

Lauren Weisberger is coming out with a new book! Weisberger is best known for The Devil Wears Prada, Everyone Worth Knowing, and Chasing Harry Winston.  I'm excited that while promoting her newest book she will be stopping in Houston!  I love the cover and it sounds like a fun read.  Do you enjoy Chicklit?  Will this make it on to your to read list?

Last Night at Chateau Marmont By Lauren Weisberger
Publication date: August 17, 2010
Description

Brooke loved reading the dishy celebrity gossip rag Last Night. That is, until her marriage became a weekly headline.
Brooke was drawn to the soulful, enigmatic Julian Alter the very first time she heard him perform "Hallelujah" at a dark East Village dive bar.
Now five years married, Brooke balances two jobs—as a nutritionist at NYU Hospital and as a consultant to an Upper East Side girls' school, where privilege gone wrong and disordered eating run rampant—in order to help support her husband's dream of making it in the music world.
Things are looking up when after years of playing Manhattan clubs and toiling as an A&R intern, Julian finally gets signed by Sony. Although no one's promising that the album will ever hit the airwaves, Julian is still dedicated to logging in long hours at the recording studio. All that changes after Julian is asked to perform on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno—and is catapulted to stardom, literally overnight. Amazing opportunities begin popping up almost daily—a new designer wardrobe, a tour with Maroon 5, even a Grammy performance.
At first the newfound fame is fun—who wouldn't want to stay at the Chateau Marmont or visit the set of one of television's hottest shows? Yet it seems that Brooke's sweet husband—the man who can't handle hot showers and wears socks to bed—is increasingly absent, even on those rare nights they're home together. When rumors about Brooke and Julian swirl in the tabloid magazines, she begins to question the truth of her marriage and is forced to finally come to terms with what she thinks she wants—and what she actually needs.
