Book Events: Girls' Nightmare Out Tour

Friday night I attended Tor's Teen Girls' Nightmare Out Tour with authors Kendare Blake, Marta Acosta, and Lisa Desrochers at Murder by the Book. Houston was the second stop of a nine day tour that will take them all over the West Coast and Mid-West. Visit for details on where they're headed next!

Each author read a passage from their book and then afterwards did a Q&A where people won amazing posters from the author's latest novel.

Kendare mentioned it was only the second time she read from Girl of Nightmares. When asked about who her influences were she mentioned Caitlin R. Kiernan and Joe Hill. Kendare explained that the cat in her novel is based on her cat.

When asked if they outline, Lisa said the characters come to her and just start talking and she just takes notes. She never outlines or knows where the story is going. Lisa mentioned that Luke from Personal Demons was the first to talk to her. Lisa was influenced by Melissa Marr for Personal Demons and Gayle Forman in her new series which she talked about a little bit.

Marta mentioned she would like to do a spin off with one of her characters from Dark Companion. She found her influences in Charlotte Brontë, Mark Twain and Henry James. Marta went to an all girls school and was looking forward to telling the story of the anti-mean girl.

When asked if any of them set out to write YA both Kendara and Marta said no, but Lisa did. She originally wrote for her teenage daughter and didn't plan to make a career out of it.
