|Ellen Hopkins reading from Tilt at Blue Willow Bookshop in Houston, TX|
I have met Ellen Hopkins a number of times and I'm amazed at what a wonderful and down to earth person she is. Ellen's novels are the "darker side" of life dealing with drugs, abuse, and pain. Why? She explained that Crank was inspired by her daughter. Ellen's readers reach out and say "that is my life" in your story. Some fans teared up when she spoke. Many moms drove over an hour on a work day to bring their kids to meet Ellen Hopkins. A few teens had every book that Ellen had ever written and she spent time with every fan. Why would you want to stomp out that passion? Why would you want to sensor an author who has touched so many people? Ellen is one of many authors who have been banned or challenged. I ask that you take time to learn more about about Banned Books from the American Library Association. I also ask that you stand up to censorship and use these books to communicate with teens.
